A landmark with history, brought back to life

Notre-Dame isn't just an almost 900-year-old Gothic cathedral: it's a symbol the world watched burn in April 2019, then come back to life five years later when it reopened to the public in December 2024. That recent history gives extra weight to every photo taken in front of its towers.

Gothic stone, the Seine running below, and the medieval streets around it make any session here feel cinematic, no filters required.

The best viewpoints and angles

The parvis, the square facing the main façade, is the classic shot: both towers, the rose window, and the three portals head-on. It's also the busiest spot, so patience (or an early start) helps.

Behind the cathedral, Square Jean-XXIII offers the opposite angle: flying buttresses, the spire, and the south rose window, with fewer tourists and gardens that add some green to the frame.

Pont de l'Archevêché and Pont au Double give you the classic 'from the Seine' view, with the cathedral reflected in the water; the river quais and Île Saint-Louis offer calmer, slightly more distant alternatives.

For something different, Shakespeare and Company bookshop, just across the river, is an icon in its own right: green façade, stacks of books, and Notre-Dame's silhouette behind it.

A fifteen-minute walk away is Le Marais, home to Place des Vosges — Paris's oldest planned square, commissioned by Henri IV and completed in 1612 — and streets lined with historic façades, perfect for a change of scenery at the end of your session.

The best time to go and how to dodge the crowds

Notre-Dame's layout means Square Jean-XXIII, behind the cathedral, catches softer light in the morning, while the main façade glows warmer late in the afternoon, when the sun hits it head-on.

Early morning, before roughly 10 or 11am, tends to be quieter on the parvis, especially on weekdays. Weekends and midday bring the biggest crowds.

Le Marais, on the other hand, picks up around midday and into the afternoon, making it a good second stop after an early Notre-Dame session.

Quick tips

  • Morning light suits Square Jean-XXIII; the main façade looks best in late-afternoon sun.
  • Stick to solid colors, they stand out better against the pale stone and grey river light.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Le Marais cobblestones and the riverside quais are not kind to heels.
  • Show up a few minutes early to scout your spot before your session starts.
  • Pack a light layer or umbrella, Paris weather can shift fast, even within the same day.
  • Mix it up: pair a shot in front of Notre-Dame with another on a Le Marais street.
